January Update

24 players braved an early morning pickup from Capital Tower to venture onto the wetlands of Johor Bahru and Horizon Hills Golf Course. Having just hosted the Iskandar Johor Open, the greens were in magnificent condition playing hard and ultra fast. The fairways were wet to say the least but it still made for a great day of golf all round.

October Update

18 players took part in Round 8 and another beautiful day at Bintan Lagoon.

The course was in superb condition and the greens were true. The Black knight, Charles Allan surprised us all by changing into an all red and black outfit and not only did he look the part but he played it with a decent 87 off the stick. Dilip Ghosh was in his signature Urban Fairways shirt and proved that practicing indoors does help – he shot the best gross of the day with a decent 83.

However the prizes are only for the best nett scores and female newcomer Julie Yeo shot a respectable 92 with a 24 handicap giving her second place with 68.

Young Frenchman Alexis Ducroiq took the honours with a gross 95 nett 67 off his 28 handicap.

The Race to Bintan remains wide open with at least 20 players still in contention to win the grand prize of a night’s stay at the Fairmont Hotel and a brand new set of Titleist irons.

The next event is scheduled for November 25th/26th at Ria Bintan and Bintan Lagoon.

We decided to take this month’s game to Raffles Country Club in Singapore for a change. As a result of some strong play and a few absences there were some moves on the overall money list.

Adam Ward again proved himself as a very solid 5 handicap winning the best nett, and newcomer Frenchman Alexis Ducrocq playing off a fair 33 came second with nett 76. The tight course with lot’s of hidden water proved a challenge with several scores above a century.

Nearest the pin was won by Peter Gebhardt.

The money list now sees a new leader Adam Ward in first place with $52,500 and Chuck Grimm close behind with $47,500

With only 3 months to go the field is still wide open and as players return for the holiday season we expect a strong turnout for the next match which is on Sept 18th at Bintan Lagoon.

The results are in for the 5^th Urban Fairways Invitational presented by BGC.

We had another good turnout of 25 players and quite a few new faces which is always nice to see. It means that our money list is growing and there are more changes at the top of the leaderboard. Anyone is still eligible to win the grand prize of a set of Titleist golf clubs, a night at the Fairmont Hotel and an overnight stay and some golf in Bintan!

A field of 29 players rocked up for the May Invitational on another glorious day at Ria Bintan Golf Club. Bloody Mary’s were served at the halfway house to ensure the golfers were cool and relaxed.

Round 3 results

A fresh field of 24 golfers boarded the ferry to participate in Round 3 of the Urban Fairways Invitational presented by BGC. The beautiful Ian Baker Finch course caused havoc early on as the greens ran a little slow, but that did not prevent newcomer Mike Monty taking the honours. Mike shot a red hot nett 69 and matched the sweltering conditions. Mike won himself a brand new Titleist bag/towel AND surged to T3 in the Race to Bintan winning the overall best nett on the day. A confident Paul Othen (“I’m looking forward to winning!” – Friday interview) was not so hot but 6 shots behind was still good enough to come second in Division A. The black knight, Charles Allan did not manage to regain his form of 30 years earlier (when I was 16 I played off 2) to rack up a score England would be proud of – 100 not out.

In Division B there was some stiff competition(and drinks) which did not deter regular Chip Wilcox from shooting an amazing (surprised himself) nett 79 and claim the runners up prize, 3 shots behind newcomer Marcus Johanssen who took first place with nett 76.

There was movement in the leaderboard which now sees 3 players tied for 3rd position – Shaun Thompson, Braden Coulburn and Mike Monty and a resilient Anne Leboutilier climb up into 2nd place still $7,500 behind early favorite Chuck Grimm!

Anne (bright chops) Leboutillier also won nearest the pin, and gets to sit in front of the dentist who had a winning smile in Round 1, Shaun Thompson.
Mike Monty really cleaned up on the day winning both Long Drive and NTP.

Our next three events all take place at the beautiful Ria Bintan course. May 15th is round 4 so block your diaries and register now.

Our second event saw Chuck Grimm race to the top of the leaderboard despite some solid competition from 30 golfers on Sunday …..results below.:

Young man Braden Coulburn who was playing in a father and son combination, shot the best nett score on the day with a 70 and put him on the leaderboard with UF$20,000 !

Big hitter Charles Allan turned up in his signature all black outfit – however this time he was not big enough with smiley James Hewitt smashing one 10 metres past to win the Hole no 5 long drive and a nice Ria Bintan prize.

The handsome American dentist Shaun Thompson who last month had a winning smile, had the same smile yesterday – sadly however he was right at the back of the field shooting a disappointing net 99. Shaun is still in second place on the leaderboard.

Three ladies managed to make the leaderboard this month wil stellar performances. Anne Leboutiliier, Alison Brown and Nicole Tan all stand a chance now to make it into the top 3 with 8 events still to go!

Dentist leads Race to Bintan with a winning smile!

Leading the race to Bintan after the first of the ten event series is Dr Shaun Thomson who shot a match winning 94 (net 68). Apparently Shaun took his time and played relaxed golf to the sounds of Guns and Roses spectators at the event said.
“I’ve never been so relaxed”, said Shaun in an interview after his win, which saw him surge to the top with
UF$20,000, as well as winning Division B and $400 worth of prizes.
